  28. It is not unusual to ask for a check or some other
  29. kind of deposit (not a credit card number) even
  30. hotels that take credit cards. And as someone pointed
  31. out in an earlier post, many of the smaller hotels
  32. in even the major cities in Italy don't take credit
  33. cards.

  35. But complete payment in advance is unusual.
  36. The normal thing is to pay a deposit for 1 or  2
  37. nights.  After all what will you do if you pay them
  38. and then you get there and find that building
  39. has burned down or the owner has passed away etc.

  42. What I did when I lived in the US was to send them a
  43. regular check in US$. The point is that they will hold the
  44. check until you actually pay whether with cash or not.

  46. I would be very wary about sending signed travellers
  47. checks through the mail as you say it is like sending
  48. cash.

  50. You might give a call to an italian back in the
  51. US and see if they have any suggestions, like
  52. the equivalent of a money order in Lira or something
  53. like that.
