- I grew up in Colorado and moved to the Bay Area 5 years ago.
- I cried during the entire drive here and hated my first two years here.
- Now I enjoy life here and can see how it would be a difficult
- transistion to go the other way - Bay Area to Colorado.
-
- I'd like to respond to Rebecca's request without commenting on the
- already observed political woes other than to say there are islands
- of forward-thinking, diversity-aware individuals. You'll find them
- in Boulder, Telluride, Crested Butte, in academic environments, and
- living quietly among the conservative stalwarts everywhere.
-
- Basically, don't move to Colorado for an avant-garde political experience.
- Do move there if you are into the outdoors in a big way.
-
- When I lived there, I skied (downhill, X-C, freestyle, snowboard, tele) - when
- the last area closed for the season (usually A-basin in June) the true powder
- hounds headed for Utah while we unpacked our bikes, climbing gear, fly-rods etc.
- Summers were full of hiking, bicycling, climbing, camping - one
- glorious adventure after another. I was a ski instructor in the winter and a
- lifeguard in the summer - make me sit behind a desk, INSIDE - no way!
-
- My lifestyle there: Get up at 7, play racquetball for an hour, get on the bike
- and head up Poudre canyon for 25 miles or so, coast home, go dancing.
- Rent was $165 a month, I bought my food at a co-op. I had muscle tone.
- My lifestyle here: Drag in to work at 10am, sit behind a computer all day,
- go home, watch TV and drink beer. Mortgage payment - 4 digits.
-
- Well, maybe it's just age...I don't know if I could enjoy living there with
- serious adult syndrome. Salaries are puny, the cold does get to you after
- a while. (But there are those 70 degree chinook days in January...ahhh!)
- Funny thing though - I do feel this natural vibrance welling up inside me
- when I'm there - even for a short time. (New Mexico too!) It's like the sky is
- so close to the ground here - it pushes you down. Back home - it lifts you up!
- It's an indescribable inner thing - it may not be the same for you. Try visiting
- and see if you "feel it". I have friends with PhD's who drive snowplows or tend bar
- to live there because of that feeling. There's only one place they've found it.
-
- It's sort of gratifying to see the Colorado-hate multiplying - when I lived there
- the last thing we wanted was more people moving into the state.
