  11. Anyone been to Indonesia lately?  I'm planning a trip in late June-early
  12. July of next year (1993) and would love to hear from anyone who's been
  13. there recently. I think I'm going to be spending my time on Java and Bali
  14. (I've got 3 weeks, which translates to about 15 days actually in Indonesia).
  15. The tentative itinerary I've worked up is as follows:

  19. Bogor (1 day), Ujung Kulon (2 days + 2 travel days), Yoygakarta + Borobudur
  20. (2 days + 1 travel day)

  22. On Bali: (1 day each, except where noted)

  24. Sanur + Lembogan Island, Ubud + Central Bali + Tanah Lot (2 days), Mt. Batur, 
  25. Klungklung + Candi Dasa
  26.  
  27. I'm particularly interested in answers to the following questions:

  29.     0) What are the best sources of information?  I've written to the
  30.        Dept. of Tourism and am reading the Lonely Planet Guide and the
  31.        Insight Guide.  Any other books (history, culture, wildlife,
  32.        tourism) highly recommended?
  33.  
  34.     1) Where are the best places to see wildlife?  If you've been to
  35.        Ujung Kulon or the reserves in E. Java, I'd love to hear about
  36.        your experiences.  Are there any reserves on Bali worth visiting?
  37.        What sorts of animals live there?
  38.  
  39.     2) How crowded will it be?  I know the early summer is high season,
  40.        but I don't know if that means 2-hour lines at temple entrances,
  41.        and mobs on the beaches, or just moderate crowds.

  43.     3) Any recommendations on hotels?  I'm hoping to stay in Sanur and
  44.        Ubud on Bali, and Yoygakarta on Java.

  46.     4) What's it like driving in Bali?  I know you don't have to have a
  47.        driver (like you do in Java) but is the traffic manageable?  How
  48.        are the roads? Bali looks very small, but I suspect bad roads and
  49.        low speed limits make drives longer than they appear from the map.

  51.     5) What's the north coast of Bali like?  Is there anything there I
  52.        shouldn't miss?  I'm currently not planning to spend any time 
  53.        there at all.

  55.     6) Where are the best beaches?  I'm looking for isolation rather than
  56.        drinks with umbrellas.  I'd like to be able to swim some and 
  57.        snorkel a little.  Are there good reefs to snorkel over?

  59.     7) Any recommendations on cultural events?  Barong or other dances?
  60.        Gamelan performances?  Little villages I shouldn't miss?

  62.     8) Am I really missing out by ignoring Sumutra, Kalimantan and
  63.        Irian Jaya?  I just don't think I've got time for everything.

  65.     9) Any recommendations for airlines or inexpensive fares?  The
  66.        cheapest quote I've gotten so far is from British Air, for $1300,
  67.        and they aren't starting service until March, so I'm a bit leery
  68.        of booking with them.

  71. to hear about any experience you had or would like to have in Indonesia.
