  18. Embassy Location:  The U.S. Embassy is located on Mud Alley in 
  19. Honiara; the mailing address is P.O. Box 561 Honiara; tel (677) 
  20. 23890.  The Ambassador is resident in Port Moresby, New Guinea.

  22. Country Description:  The Solomon Islands form an archipelago in 
  23. the southwest Pacific about 1200 miles northeast of Australia.  The 
  24. capital is Honiara on the island of Guadalcanal.  The Solomon 
  25. Islands is a parliamentary democracy within the British 
  26. Commonwealth.  Tourism facilities are limited, and outside of 
  27. Honiara may be of poor quality.

  29. Entry Requirements:  Passports, onward/return tickets and proof of 
  30. sufficient funds are required.  Visitors' permits are issued on 
  31. arrival for stays of up to two months in a one-year period.  For

  36. Medical Facilities:  Medical facilities are generally adequate.  
  37. Hospitals and pharmacies are limited to population centers and 
  38. missions.  The incidence of malaria is extremely high.  Many 
  39. visitors begin taking malarial suppressants before arrival.  Doctors 
  40. and hospitals often expect immediate cash payments for health 
  41. services.  U.S. medical insurance is not always valid outside the 
  42. United States.  Supplemental medical insurance with specific 
  43. overseas coverage has proved to be useful.  Information on health 
  44. matters is available from the Centers for Disease Control

  47. Information on Crime:  Major crimes against travelers are not 
  48. common, though petty crimes against property frequently occur in the 
  49. capital city, Honiara.  Useful information on guarding valuables and 
  50. protecting personal security while traveling abroad is provided in 
  51. the Department of State pamphlet, "A Safe Trip Abroad".  It is

  55. Drug Penalties:  Penalties for possession, use and trafficking in 
  56. illegal drugs are strict and convicted offenders can expect lengthy 
  57. jail sentences and fines.
