- I mentioned a few days ago that I'd read that one could hire
- a university student for little money to be your guide while
- travelling through Russia and the republics (as opposed to hiring
- a professional interpreter, which can cost big $$). Details are:
-
- The article ("Seeing the new Russia, now that the Party's Over",
- Simon Winchester, Conde Nast Traveler, October 1992 issue I think)
- suggested contacting:
-
- Institute of Linguistics
- Komsomolskiy Prospekt 6, 119021
- 7-095-246-0693
-
- and
-
- Moscow State University
- Lenin Hills, 119899
- 7-095-939-2520
- fax -939-0126
-
- The author further states:
-
- "Contact one of the schools and arrange to interview two or three
- students upon your arrival in Moscow. So keen will each be that
- it will be briefly heartbreaking to turn the others down. After you
- make your selection, agree on a price, and (after testing your choice
- by being guided through the delights of Moscow or St. Petersburg)
- you are ready to set off into the unknown."
-
- Sounds like a good deal to me. I've been studying Russian but I don't
- know how good I'd *really* do once I get there (another year or so).
