- Hi there folks,
- I may be overestimating the level of interest in
- Australian soccer, but I thought I'd share the scores of the league cup
- with you (yes I was surprised that we had one too :-) ). Three matches were
- played yesterday (18/11) and whoooeee, goals everywhere.
-
- Melbourne CSC 2 - Preston 2
-
- South Melbourne 6 - Morwell Falcons 2
-
- Adelaide City 5 - West Adelaide 2
-
-
- Second Leg matches are scheduled in a fortnights time. Unfortunately
- all I know of the last match is that Carl Veart scored 3 for City, a
- short summary of the other two matches follow.
-
- The Preston-Melbourne match was the first ever game of underwater
- soccer played in Australia, and perhaps the world. There was a huge downpour
- and the decision to go ahead was made by the referee (Ziggy Mnich) after
- he was satisfied that no-one would drown. The rain had stopped, though there
- were intermittent showers, for the game. Basically passing on the ground
- was only viable to ones self (I believe this is called dribbling) and high
- balls had an annoying habit of stopping dead. Preston decided that seven
- of their regular first team line up were clean enough, and sent out a very
- young team in a move which seemed to indicate that they were attempting
- to make a late inclusion for the World Youth Cup. Preston surprised Melbourne
- when Vasco Trechevski (sp?), a 17-year old, opened the scoring with a shot
- high into the net from the edge of the box in front of goal. Melbourne
- replied 6 minutes later with a goal of their own by Vaughan Coveny(sp?) who
- glanced the free kick from out wide off his head inside the far post.
- Melbourne dominated proceedings and made raid after raid on Prestons goal,
- naturally Preston were next to score. The second half saw Trechevski score
- his second goal with a powerfully hit drive past the diving keeper. Not
- wanting to be embarrassed by a team who are on a negative score in the League
- competition Melbourne became panicky as the time ran out. Preston make
- this day one of historic victory? Sorry that only happens in fairy tales.
- With only two minutes to go Mark Silic(pretty sure about this spelling)
- scored a face-saving (clichi alert!) equaliser. Melbournes coach Ken Murphy
- went off his head after the match saying the team lacked motivation and
- allowed themselves to think they'd win without trying, hence didn't, and
- almost lost.
-
-
- South Melbourne and Morwell were also forced to play in wet
- conditions, which led directly to the first goal. A header from Francis
- Awaritife (no problems in spelling here) towards the bottom corner of the goal
- was mishandled by the Morwell keeper. 1-0. After the half-time break the
- fun really started, Morwell levelled with a beatifully worked goal by
- some guy whose name I forget. Anyway it was a good through ball nicely tucked
- into the corner of the goal. I'm sure you've all seen this sort of thing.
- Paul Wade restored South Melbournes lead with a header from a corner, another
- corner soon after gave Wright an easy tap in (almost easy) for 3-1.
- Then the rains came down in a major way and Justin Geary pulled the lead
- back to 3-2 after an unsuccessful clearing punch by the Melbourne keeper.
- The last fifteen minutes saw melbourne decide that they wanted to take
- some holidays next fortnight and make sure of the match in the first leg
- so that attendance at the second leg became arbitrary. Tassios banged one
- in from a fair distance, and then Awaritife ended up firly lonely in Morwells
- penalty area with the ball at his feet, he'd left the goalie sprwled on the
- ground after a kick forward was fumbled by said keeper. Awaritife stopped
- the ball before the line, turned his back and back heeled the ball into
- the net, cheeky fellow. Tassios, not sure Morwell had had enough, repeated
- his dose to give the score it's final 6-2 outcome.
-
- I hope you enjoyed that kiddies.
-
- BTW: Did anyone find my post on the upcoming Youth World Cup of use? Should
- I post subsequent information?
