- In my humble opinion, despite all the rantings of Rangers fans about their
- club being the best in Britain (which I happen to agree with right now), the
- English Premier League is clearly a better league than its Scottish counterpart.
- There are, I believe, several reasons for this, but here I will expand on just
- one which hasn't really been touched so far in this newsgroup.
-
- The reason is obvious: CLOSENESS OF COMPETITION. One of the basic qualities of
- a good league is that it should be consistently close, in order to sustain
- public interest. In England these days it is very rare for a team to take the
- title 2 years in a row, what is more the makeup of the 'Top 3' (UEFA spots etc.)
- is always different. The title itself usually goes down to the last month and
- often to the last 1 or 2 fixtures of the season. Yet in Scotland we have the
- situation where Rangers have won 4 in a row and are odds-on to make it 5 this
- season (IMHO). The gap between Rangers and 'whoever is second' is already so
- large, and increasing, that most likely the issue will be decided with at
- least 8 or 10 rounds remaining of the scheduled 44. Then we will get 2 months
- of 'dead games' with nothing to play for (other than 2nd/3rd and the remaining
- UEFA spots - BIG DEAL, whoever finishes 2nd and 3rd will get dumped in the first
- round in Europe next season anyway !!!)
-
- So, in essence, what we have in Scotland right now (if current trends/form
- continues) is Rangers the dominant force who are consistently a class above
- everyone else in the whole league. THIS DOES NOT MAKE FOR A QUALITY LEAGUE !!!
- The average playing standard may be higher (so they say - I happen to disagree)
- but even if it is, this definitely does NOT translate to the Scottish league
- being superior, when you take the above argument on 'closeness' into account.
-
- NOW, before all you Rangers fans turn up the flaming, let me say: I am NOT
- writing this with the attitude "Rangers are wrecking Scottish football/They
- are too good/I hate them" etc. If it was Celtic, Liverpool, Manchester United
- or anyone else in the same situation I would write exactly the same thing. I
- have no reason to hate Glasgow Rangers, and I don't. All I am saying is that
- I believe this issue is one of the fundamental reasons why the English league
- is Britain's best (even though it may not have Britain's best team for the
- moment !!)
-
- Any feedback ? Email me - once I get this asbestos suit adjusted.
-
- Regards,
-
