  12. Recently, there has been suggestions that the Pittsburgh Penguins team of
  13. 1983-84 was the worst team ever, or at least of the 1980's.  Below is listed
  14. the 10 worst seasons by an NHL team ever, and as can be seen the Pittspurgh
  15. Penguins season does not make the list.  The list shows quite a few
  16. expansion teams as having the worst seasons, not surprisingly.  It also
  17. appears that the Ottawa Senators are heading for a place high upon this list.

  40. Clearly, the worst seasons by NHL clubs does not include Pittsburgh's 
  41. 16 58 06 season of 1983-84 (Winning Percentage .2375).  In fact, two other
  42. teams during the 1980's had a lower winning percentage then Pittsburgh,
  43. i.e., Winninpeg (.2000), and Quebec (.1938).  It should also be remembered
  44. that the Pittsbugh team of 1983-84 was in a tough race with New Jersey for
  45. the number one pick overall, and consequently they probably could have had a
  46. better record without this New Jersey pressure.  If anything the Penguin
  47. season of 1983-84 shows testament of a need for an NBA draft lottery for the
  48. NHL clubs missing the playoffs.

  50. It is typical of Pittspurgh fans to think that the 1983-84 Pens team was the
  51. worst ever, since they believe that the NHL is about 10 years old.  They
  52. probably are unaware that the Pittsburgh Pirates played in the NHL long
  53. before the Penguins came into existence.
