  16.   The St. Louis Blues finally beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 4-2 at the St.
  17. Louis Arena after losing to them twice in their previous two meetings. 
  18. The Blues came out storming in the first period outshooting the Lightning
  19. 20-5 and scoring three goals to lead 3-0.  If not for Pat Jablonski, the
  20. Blues could have scored more.  Jablonski was very brilliant but his team
  21. was overmatched by his former teammates.

  23. Brett Hull got the Blues going with a power-play goal at 6:05 of the period,
  24. 10 seconds into Rob Ramage's boarding penalty.  While the Blues worked the
  25. puck at the points, Hull sneaked into the high slot and snapped the shot past
  26. Jablonski after a sharp pass from Craig Janney. Emerson got the second assist.
  27. The Blues continued to apply pressure, with the checking line of Bob Bassen
  28. Rich Sutter and Philippe Bozon swarming all over Jablonski.  The former Blue
  29. didn't crack, but his teammates did. Brian Bradley was caught for holding
  30. at 11:17.

  32. Jablonski made three big saves, two on Jeff Brown and another on Emerson,
  33. before Korolev circled out of the corner and beat Jablonski with a slap shot
  34. between the pads at 12:41 for his third goal of the season.  The shot was the
  35. Blues' 15th of the period.  Garth Butcher's high-sticking penalty at 15:33
  36. should have put the Lightning on the attack, but Blues' penalty killers Bassen
  37. and Rich Sutter spent as much time in Tampa's zone as they did defending their
  38. zone.  The Blues didn't allow a shot on goal on the Tampa power play, and  
  39. Butcher jumped into a three-on-two rush when the penalty expired.  Hull skated 
  40. past Marc Bergevin and poked the puck to Rick Zombo, who slid a pass to 
  41. Butcher in the crease. Butcher batted the puck past Jablonski at 17:44 for 
  42. his first goal of the season.  The three goals was the most for the Blues in
  43. the first period of a game this season, and the 20 shots on goal was their
  44. most in a period this season.

  46. The Blues seemingly had the game under control, but they promptly gave it back
  47. to the Lightning at the start of the second period.  The Lightning started the
  48. period as the Blues started the game, scoring twice in the first 3:39 to cut
  49. the Blues' lead to 3-2.  First, Shawn Chambers slid the puck to a wide open
  50. Creighton in the slot, and Creighton beat Blues goalie Curtis Joseph at 1:47.
  51. Then, after Zombo's tripping penalty at 3:21, Bradley zipped past Lee Norwood
  52. on a give-and-go with Chambers at the Blues' blue line and raced in on right
  53. wing. Bradley slid the puck under Joseph at 3:39 to cut the Blues lead to 3-2.

  55. Hull missed two golden opportunities to restore the Blues' two-goal lead a few 
  56. minutes later. He wound up and rifled a big slap shot into Jablonski's pads,
  57. then was robbed by a sliding Jablonski on a snap shot from the slot.  Hull
  58. showed his frustration as he skated off the ice, slamming his stick -- and
  59. breaking it -- on the glass by the Blues' bench.  The Blues averted disaster
  60. midway through the period when Murray Baron and Butcher took penalties in a
  61. span of 1:08.  The Blues killed Tampa's 52-second, two-man advantage and the
  62. remainder of Butcher's penalty to come out unscathed.

  64. Emerson then slipped a shot past Jablonski with 2:04 left in the period, the
  65. only bad goal the former Blue gave up all night.  Defenseman Peter Taglianetti
  66. took Korolev and Janney out of the play along the right wing boards, but not
  67. before Korolev slid the puck toward the slot.  Emerson snapped a shot that
  68. deflected off Jablonski's stick.

  70. Both teams were scoreless in the third period despite the Blues outshooting
  71. the Lightning 12-5.  The Blues outshot the Lightning 42-25 in the game.
