- Patil was a good stroke player but certainly not a good fielder.
- However his test career came to an end not because of his batting
- failure but due to the ego hassles of Kapil and Gavaskar. Gavaskar was
- bent upon Kapil's omission after the Delhi Test with England because
- he made an irresponsible shot at a very critical juncture which in the
- end cost the match. So for the next match Kapil was dropped and along
- with him Patil also . Perhaps this was done as a balacing act. Then
- came Ajhar who made centuries in three consecutive test matches. Kapil
- came after missing one test but Patil could not be brought in for
- Ajhar had made a century. Of course after his three centuries he too
- had a very batting record. Ajar must have kept in the team at that
- time only for his fielding abilities.
