- Interesting combined use of point-of-sale technology and the chip
- system we use in place of a door key here at work as a replacement
- for night and weekend security guards.
-
- My guess is that they are using the discount as a means of getting
- regular skiers to use the system. They will then use the statistics
- gathered with regular skiers to design a pricing scheme for general
- use of this system later. (paranoid cynical view)
-
- My other guess is that they are using this as a means of getting a
- certain group of skiers that does not use the area enought to make
- a season pass worthwhile, but might actually generate more cash
- flow (in concessions, and in tickets) if they were motivated to
- ski that one area more exclusively than otherwise, to ski there.
-
- If they were really serious, they *would* allow point-of-sale use
- in other places, since then they could correlate your skiing ability
- with what kind of food you eat and what kind of products you buy,
- and thus target resort services more effectively.
-
- Speaking as someone whose university is leading the wave of the future
- (barring lawsuits or other complaints) by replacing its ID card with an
- "access" card -- that can be used as a debit card and phone card as
- well as library card and god knows what else -- you do not want to
- increase the ability of people to cross-correlate your spending with
- other data bases. (My access card has *none* of the features enabled.)
- One of our supermarkets here has a very cute system for correlating
- purchases with buyer demographics that is based on automatic coupon
- discounts for users. Marketers are very clever.
