- A reasonable question.
-
- For reasons similar to Kelly's, but also different.
- 1) Greater stress by our cultures toward education and work and less on
- "play." To stress: I mean people take real flak for not towing the work
- ethic line, especially closer to 1st generation immigrants. Stress on
- academics, wait until you get to be an adult (at which time you don't
- have time), etc.
- 2) Historically, skiing was not really developed Asia (sure you can point
- to cases of Tibetans and Nepal Monks who slid down hill sides). Skiing
- really developed as a means of transportation. And most of Asia lived
- below the snow line.
- 3) Sure a few fine skiers of an Asian-American bent, but mostly beginners.
- What you get are group social clubs undertaking skiing, but not just
- skiing. Skiing is a fling thing for the young and a passing phase.
-
- I considered looking at my old H.S. Year books, we had a ski club, but I
- didn't pick up skiing until work requirements in college pushed the issue.
- I would have been able to count the percentages from the faces in those
- year books [I was one of two photographers]: but the faces were not of
- proportion to the make up of the school (amazingly "integrated," and I do
- remember the African-American skiers).
-
- Shall we bring in soc.culture.asian.american?
-
- California needs snow.
