- The last few days have seen some heavy snow in the French Alpes (and heavy
- rain everywhere else in France.) Val Thorens is one of the early opening
- resorts in France and is situated in the Savoie department at 2300m.
-
- The road to the resort was not well cleared and was icy, as would be expected
- pre-season. Anyone going skiing in the French Alpes at this time should take
- snow chains. The village itself was deserted with only a few shops open.
-
- There was a fairly good range of open pistes, 1 black, a few reds and blues
- although none had been particuarly well groomed as 1 piste basher seemed to
- be serving the whole resort. A number of pistes hadn't been touched and offered
- deep powder on piste skiing to those who dared. A real day for the experts who
- were whooping it up. Despite the snow depth the pistes on the glacier had ice
- showing in places but no bare ground or rocks.
-
- Judging by the number of cars on the car-park there were probably about 200
- people on the slopes. The 'crowds' having been frightened off by the dire
- weather forecast issued on Friday evening.
-
- The morning was bright and sunny but conditions got worse in the afternoon,
- the experts didn't seem to notice but people of my level began to tire in the
- cold and low visibility.
-
- I will either have to get a lot better at skiing or go shopping Saturdays :-)
-
- David.
