  13. CP Rail has apparently asked government permission to abandon all its
  14. lines east of Sherbrooke, Quebec. All or most of these lines are part of
  15. its Canada Atlantic railway.

  17.  CN and CP are allowed to abandon 4% of their networks a year, I
  18. understand, but a large-scale abandonment like this would presumably
  19. require special permission.

  21. VIA Rail provides passenger service between Montreal and Halifax three
  22. days a week on the CP route through northern Maine and Saint John, New
  23. Brunswick. (It also provides three-times-a-week service on the CN route
  24. through northern New Brunswick.)

  26. CP's operations in Nova Scotia were traditionally operated as the
  27. Dominion Atlantic Railway, which is under 999-year lease to CP.
  28. Passenger service on CP's Nova Scotia lines ended in the massive VIA
  29. cutbacks of January 1991.

  31.  This information is rather sketchy.  I heard about CP Rail's
  32. application to abandon the service on the radio this evening, and
  33. everything else in this post is from memory.
