- It depends upon what you're planning on doing. The most versatil (and also
- most expensive) will be a new current multi-mode multi-band rig. The
- Yaesu FT-736R , Kenwood TS-790, and ICOM IC-970 are all fine rigs and will
- let you do just about everything there is to do on 2m/70cm. But their
- priced around $1600-2000!
-
- If you still want multi-mode capabilties to be able to operate on the
- satellites or work some terrestial DX, then the predecessors to those rigs
- such as the Yaesu FT-726R will be fine. You should be able to pick them up
- for $700-1000.
-
- But, if all you're interested in doing is operating FM, either simplex or
- via repeaters (or AO-21 a relatively new satellite that uses FM), then
- perhaps a mobile rig with a 12V power supply would be your best best. New
- they'll run you $400-800, used perhaps $300-600.
-
- Last but not least is just a dual band handie talkie (HT). With a
- reasonable antenna an a metropolitan area, you can reach many people via
- the large quantities of repeaters.
-
- Without knowing more about what you want to do and your budget, it's hard to
- suggest specific rigs or even types of rigs. Tell us some more about your
- plans and I'm sure we can help you select a rig.
-
- And welcome to the wonderful world of amateur radio.
