- I was hoping to avoid head-to-head comparisons in the EOS FAQ, but I guess
- they'll go into the next revision. (I thought it might be hard to be
- objective. But if there's a need there's a need.)
-
- Here are two articles that I saved from a while back that seem to cover all
- the points I can recall. Someday, I will edit them down for a future FAQ.

- I think both complement each other rather than one being better
- than the other. I have a 10s bought before the Elan came out and
- I'm very pleased with it. Now which are these differences and how they
- complement ? Here is what I can recollect from the top of my
- head.
-
- - The 10s has a faster motor 5fps against 3fps of Elan ( however this
- might be viewed as an advantage for the Elan since 5fps can be
- too fast for some slow moving actions i.e. you get many pictures that
- look alike ).
-
- - The 10s has 5 or 6 more Custom Functions among them the useful
- leave-the-film-leader in or out.
-
- - The Elan has a better overall Exp Compensation mechanism similar
- to the one of the EOS-1 which to me has no parallel among any SLR.
-
- - The Elan flash is overall much better than the 10s though i won't
- consider any of them for any seriouss flash work ( get the 430EZ
- for this purpose ). The differences are in red-eye-reduction
- and zoom-head for different focal lengths in the Elan; none
- of them available on the 10s
-
- - The Elan can retain up to 5 bar-code programs against 1 on the 10s
-
- - The Elan is considerably less noisy though I wouldn't be so confident
- about the belts durability.
-
- - The Elan has center-weighted ( not present in the 10s ) and a
- "slimmer" partial meter though its matrix metering is less
- sofisticated than the 10s i.e. 6 segments against 8 on the 10s.
- The 10s multi-segment meter takes in consideration camera orientation
- something I think not even present in the EOS-1.
-
- - The 10s has 3 focusing marks against 1 on the Elan ( though I
- haven't found this feature as useful as Canon claimes to be).
-
- If I were you I would go for the Elan though I'll be a bit
- worried about the belts durability. They are both great cameras
- and you should be pleased with any of them. Choose the one that
- best fits your needs and your picture taking techniques.

- B&H mailed me the 430EZ with little hassle and Adorama mailed
- me the EOS-10s as well as a bogen tripod with little delays.
- Both are good stores though the Adorama people are a bit more
- polite ( to me at least ).

- I wouldn't say the Elan is closer to the Rebel than the 10s. It is quite close
- to the 10s, except it has only one AF target, no interval timer, no
- film-leader-out rewind, and is 3fps. You see, I have an Elan. It does have
- multiple exposure. Spot metering? Only the Mega-SLR's have them, but partial
- meter is quite good. It shares the same chasis as the 10s (Rebel does not).
- These are the facts.
-
- Now the opinion. I did not chose the 10s because I didn't need 3 AF targets.
- I do like the Elan's more advanced flash (especially flash comp). You don't
- alway have time to or want to mount a hot-shoe flash. Holding your entire
- camera kit up to your eye can draw unwanted attention in many places. The
- other reason I chose the Elan is $$$. Buying the Elan/28-80USM kit saved me
- ~$50. So far, the only thing I missed is the leader-out film rewind.
-
- Now for the Nikon/Canon discussion. I would buy Nikon for its ruggedness, and
- Canon for its user-friendliness. Their optics are about the same, unless you
- are Galen Rowell, then you'd want the absolute best. I eventually went for
- Canon's user friendliness, after several experiences with not being able to
- act quickly enough to capture a passing moment.
-
- So there you have it.

-
- I will just add to the previous two postings and say that the 10S has a more
- flexible *flash* TTL metering system compared to the Elan. The Speedlite
- Reference Guide notes that the 10S checks the exposure of the area under the
- active AF zone and ignores the other two. This allows for taking pictures of
- people against white walls, beside mirrors, etc. and the TTL meter won't
- get as confused as the centre-weighted TTL flash meter of the Elan.
-
- If you do intend to use the built-in flash, note that the 10S flash covers
- to focal lengths down to 35mm, whereas the autozoom flash of the Elan covers
- down to 28mm. (Ever notice that no 10S "kit" ever came with a lens wider
- than 35mm??? :-)
-
- I've heard that the red-eye reduction system on the Elan isn't always
- effective, but is certainly better than none at all (comments on its
- effectiveness are welcome for inclusion into the next FAQ--email is fine).
- The best way is to go with the 430EZ (but that costs $$$).
-
- Finally, since these postings, the EOS A2 has emerged to take the place of
- the 10S. Canon will have parts for at least 7 more years, so I wouldn't
- worry about obsolescence. I just added that for those who do! :-)
-
- Well, I hope this information helps you in your decision process!
-
- (Actually, can some Elan owners tell me how often they use the Quick Control
- Dial? It seems awfully useful on the EOS-1 with its simulated "match needle
- metering", but the less sophisticated manual mode on the Elan doesn't seem to
- suggest heavy use of the QCD.)
-
- ACS -- Editor of the Canon EOS FAQ...
- Yet another reason to buy a Canon EOS! :-)
