- Looking at the CU articles on cameras is what convinced me that CU
- isn't worth the price of a subscription (to me). I guess they might do
- a good job rating laundry soap and the like, but their ratings of
- cameras aren't worth much. The problem is that they don't place much
- importance on a number of features that serious photographers would
- need or that beginners would probably need a little while down the
- road. It's been a while since I looked, but my impression of CU is
- that they would give a very high rating for these low-end AF SLR's
- without any control over shutter speed simply because they're cheap.
- That *might* be fine for the beginner who's having a hard time just
- figuring out which end to look through, but I think most people who are
- looking at SLR's will need the extra control.
-
- My suggestion is to look at the December issue of Pop. Photo. It lists
- all the major cameras with complete sets of features. Note this list
- is only of the "flagship" cameras for each line, but you can usually
- extrapolate to get the lower-end models by deleting spot-metering,
- DOF-preview, mirror lock-up, and other features camera makers have
- deemed are important to the pro only. That, or go talk to a guy at a
- good camera store.
-
- _Please_ don't make the mistake of assuming that the Pentax K-1000 is
- the "best" because it's the simplest. You don't have to give up
- exposure control just because your camera has auto-exposure. I think
- there are a lot of more modern cameras out there that still leave the
- photographer in control of the image, and it's time to lay the K-1000
- to rest.
