  26. I don't have any data, but I have a dimmer that doesn't make
  27. lamps buzz.  Actually, I have two of them.  One is a big old
  28. rheostatic dimmer that just adds resistance to dim the
  29. light.  The other is a Variac transformer that converts my
  30. 120v AC to anything from 0v to 135v.  The rheostat is less
  31. expensive, smaller, and lighter, but puts out quite a bit of
  32. heat since it is essentially burning up the excess power.

  34. Electronic dimmers may be smaller, cheaper, and much more
  35. efficient, but if you care about hum, the old pre-electronic
  36. methods work better.
