- Kevin,
- Please, PLEASE! be careful with your kitten and Delta in
- particular! The ONLY time I flew with Amos (on Delta) they unloaded
- him from the pet hold area (they don't allow any pets in the passenger
- area, even Amos, who was less than 3 months old and still on a bottle)
- but instead of bringing him up to the pet/large item counter at
- Hartsfield Airport, they let him go up the baggage carousel! Now,
- this may not have been so bad at Laguardia, where the baggage clam is
- a flat converor belt, but at Hartsfield the bags are lifted up from
- the basement into the center of a circular converor that is on an
- angle. The bags are dropped at the top of the convevor and they slide
- down an few feet to the bottom. Poor little Amos got quite a ride!
- The poor little guy was TERRIFIED! My dad called the ASPCA but found
- that nothing could be done because Amos wasn't hurt at all, go figure.
- I suggest a few things:
- A) Find an airline that will allow your kitten in the passenger area
- with you. I doubt that this is possible seeing your resservations and
- all, but keep it in mind for the way home, or next time.
- B) Mark the box clearly with "LIVE ANIMAL HANDLE WITH CARE" stickers.
- They should have come with the box, but a pet store or a vet might
- have them if not. Also have your name and a phone number where you
- can be reached (remember you won't be at your normal number!) on the box.
- C) Have your vet give you a certificate of health and proof of
- vaccination for you to carry. You shouldn't need it while travelling
- inside the US but better safe than sorry.
- D) Keep a picture and description of the cat with you, or in your
- carry on, in case kitty gets out in the airport. DO NOT open the
- carrier in the airport under any circumstances
- E) Keep kitty with you until the last minute. Pets are borded early,
- but not that much sooner than you. Ask if you can stay near the
- baggage drop with the box until the kitty will be borded. If you have
- a friend with you it woud be good to run ahead and get your seat and
- "check in" so you woun't be delayed after leaving kitty.
- F) This is the most important TIP HEAVILY!!! Let everyone who you
- see that will handle your baby know just how much that kitty means to
- you. Jot down names too if you can..."Bob? ok Bob, well, thank you
- for your time and thanks for taking such good care of kitty for me.
- I'll be sure to mention your kindness and help in the letter I send to
- Delta when kitty gets to New York safe and sound!" Corny, yes but you
- also have a name to mention if kitty DOESN'T get there ok, and Bob
- knows it!
-
- I hope you and your kitten have a good trip, I'll leave the details
- of how to get kitty packed up to the ones who's cats will go in a
- carrier!
