  14. Well, as I sit here my cockatiel has taken up a temporary
  15. residence at an animal hospital in Owings Mills, Maryland
  16. (just north of Baltimore) for a week or so.
  17.  
  18. When I came home from a couple days vacation last night, I noticed
  19. that the bird was pretty listless, a little puffed up, shivery, cranky,
  20. and had lost a little weight.  Her droppings were a little runny,
  21. and her condition had worsened slightly by morning (including a
  22. noticeable weight loss), so I took her in to a vet.  Upon weighing her,
  23. she was only 68 grams, a big loss from her usual weight of 85-90 in
  24. just one short weekend.

  26. So the vet, who has 17 birds herself, recommended a stay of a
  27. couple days, which I am extending with a couple days boarding,
  28. assuming that all goes well, since I am going away for Thanksgiving.

  30. The prognosis is a bacterial infection, and the outlook is good, but
  31. the vet's verdict was that if I'd let it go another day the bird
  32. probably would have died.  My other bird, the quaker, was going to
  33. stay with friends, but will probably be boarded at the hospital as
  34. well, just as a precaution.  He shows no signs of any infection,
  35. but I'd rather bite the financial bullet and not take the chance of
  36. losing him.

  38. I guess the idea here is to take your bird to a good avian vet
  39. if anything seems to be awry - droppings, listlessness, etc.  In
  40. this case the weight loss was strikingly obvious (in just 2 days!)
  41. and the cost of a visit is very small compared to the alternatives.

  43. And if anybody is still looking for a good avian vet in the Baltimore/
  44. Washington area, I think I've found one.
