- My rat had the same problem. I got rid of them with a special insecticide
- shampoo that I bought at my vet's. It involved bathing the rat (fill a tub
- with a couple of inches of lukewarm water and deposit the rat; splash and
- rub the rat until it's soaked. Rats don't appreciate this, by the way),
- then shampooing it all over and rubbing the lather in well, onto its skin.
- Then the rat has to sit (out of water) for something like five minutes
- while the insecticide does its thing. I held my rat on the side of the
- tub, with my hands cupped around her because she shivered with cold. Then
- you rinse the rat in the tub (same technique as wetting it), gently towel
- it dry, and release the rat into its cage. Make sure you have cleaned the
- cage, disposing of _all_ bedding (anything that isn't metal, actually) in
- between removing the rat for the bath and putting the rat back. Repeat
- (including cage cleaning) for three days running.
-
- This got rid of the mites on both my rat and my sister's. I forget what
- the shampoo is called, sorry. Your vet might know. It was blue, in a
- green-and-blue-and-white bottle, if that helps any. It's not sold in pet
- stores, so far as I know. Good luck! Let me know how it turns out.
