- Actually, you're not as daft as you may think. The technology
- to produce an accurate scanned image of a document (or an image of
- some other type of material, eg a garment) has recently been developed.
- The dept I work in has recently started a project to set up an
- archive of CD-ROMs which contain scanned documents from amongst other
- things, our rare book collection.
-
- Before you get too excited, this sort of technology is still
- largely experimental and the project I mentioned has only just been
- started. We haven't decided *how* the rare and fragile books should
- be scanned (and then there's copyright and royalty payments to the
- owners of the books, etc).
-
- Still, it's only a matter of time (albeit years) before you
- or I can buy a CD-ROM which has an exact, full colour, copy of antique
- hand written and illuminated texts (or other material).
