  31. Distinctiveness:  It's very Ice Cube... but different.  Wow.
  32. Dopeness Rating:  Phat.  Rotundly phat.  Phat+.
  33.      Rap Part:    Even phatter.  Needing to see Weight Watchers phat. 
  34.      Sounds:      Phat.  Especially when it's closer to _Amerikkka_
  35.                   ('course I like hard stuff), but just as dope when
  36.                   it slows down the beets.
  37. Message:          This is a very NoI/Street Politics style of speak, but
  38.                   much more like _Amerikkka_ than _Death Certificate_
  39. Tracks:           56:30 is the clock time with 16 tracks.
  40. Label:            Priority Records.  Produced by the usual Cube suspects.
  41. Profanity:        Oh, my, yes.  His language is peppered with "niggas"
  42.                   and "b*tches."  In fact, every male is a nigga and
  43.                   every woman is a b*tch or a ho' (he's an equal
  44.                   opportunity offender).

  53. Obligatory personal history:

  55. Well, as everybody but Bush knows, Ice Cube is quite late of NWA,
  56. moving from that crowd to his own style of speak with three major
  57. musical efforts: _Amerikkka's Most Wanted_, the EP _Kill At Will_ and
  58. _Death Certificate_.  And just to prove that he could, he played
  59. Doughboy to critical acclaim in 1991's _Boyz N The Hood_.  Plus, he's
  60. put together and produced Da Lench Mob whose _Guerillas In The Mist_
  61. has gotten much dap.
  62.  
  63. And now he's back with _Predator_ (and this time only two weeks late).
  64. This album is a synthesis of _Death Certificate_ and _Amerikkka's Most
  65. Wanted_ in terms of the lyric; however, it's a very different album
  66. musically.  Although it starts out with the hard core sound of "The
  67. Nigga Ya Love To Hate" and "The Product", it quickly moves to a more
  68. relaxed sound, somewhat like "Summer Vacation" or "Alive On Arrival"
  69. maybe.

  71. Still, this is one dope album.  Fans will not be disappointed, I
  72. think. 
  73.  
  74. We open with "The First Day of School (intro)," Cube's usual
  75. one-minute intro track.  This time, school has bars.
  76.  
  77.         "...spread your cheeks and give me two good coughs"
  78.  
  79. We move without pause to "When Will They Shoot?" which might be
  80. described as "The Nigga Ya Love To Hate, part three" but with a choice
  81. Queen sample and the inserted voice of XClan this is even better.

  83.             "Ice Cube is out-gunned
  84.              What is the outcome?
  85.              Will they do me like Malcolm?
  86.              'Cause I bust styles, new styles
  87.              standin' strong while 
  88.              others run a hundred miles
  89.              But I never run, never will
  90.              Deal with the devil with my motherf*ckin' steel
  91.              BOOM
  92.              Media try to do me
  93.              But I was a boy in the hood before the movie
  94.              Yeah, call me nigga, bigot and a spook
  95.              But you the one who voted for Duke, motherf*cker"

  97. This track is much HARD and very in your face both lyrically and
  98. musically.  I think it's one of his best ever, vintage Cube with a
  99. touch of the newer sing-songish voice he did a bit on Lench Mob.

  102.        and don't understand why a nigga's got an AK"
  103.

  105.                          What's that?
  106.                          That's the day all the niggas died"

  108. This should be his second release definitely.  All that and a slice of
  109. government cheese.  Damn.

  111.                   "I met Farakhan and had dinner
  112.                    Now you ask if I'm a 5%-er
  113.                    Well... no but I go where the brothers go
  114.                    Down with Compton mosque number fifty four
  115.                    made a little dough
  116.                    still got a sister on my elbow
  117.                    Did Ice Cube sell out?  You say hell no
  118.                    A Black woman is my manager, not in the kitchen
  119.                    so could you please stop bitchin'?"

  121. Anyway, "I'm Scared (insert)" is a short series of samples.  A nice
  122. interrupution, but i might have been better placed later in the album.

  124.                               "What scares us is I think we hear violence"
  125.  
  126. Anyway, this brings us to "Wicked," Cube's first release out some two
  127. or three weeks now.  I also like this one although is doesn't come
  128. close to "When Will They Shoot?".  This is a samplefest with bits and
  129. pieces of "Funky Worm", Das EFX's "Looseys" and a few others.

  131.           "Nappy head, nappy chest, nappy chin
  132.            Never seen with a happy grin
  133.            Show the fat frown 'cause I'm down
  134.            Take a look around
  135.            All you see is big black boots
  136.            Steppin', use my steel toe as a weapon"

  138. The worst thing about this track is the ragga voice around the chorus,
  139. but that's not even a bad thing.

  141.                "People want to know how cum
  142.                 I got a gat
  143.                 And I'm lookin' out the window like Malcolm
  144.                 Ready to bring that noise
  145.                 Kinda trigger happy like the ghetto boys
  146.                 April 29th brought power to the people
  147.                 And we might just see a sequel
  148.                 'Cause police got equal hate
  149.                 A horse is just a pig that don't fly straight
  150.                 Thru with Darryl Gates
  151.                 But it's Willie Williams
  152.                 Down with the pilgrims
  153.                 Just a super slave
  154.                 We'll have to break his ass up like Super Dave"

  156. This moves us to "Now I Gotta Wet'Cha."  Anything with Aqua Boogie in
  157. it should get dap and this is no exception.  It's much less hard,
  158. sound wise at least, compared to the last two tracks.

  161.                                valley for the KKK rally
  162.                                A place on the map where the order is
  163.                                those devils can beat up a motorist
  164.                                And get nuthin' but a slap on the wrist"

  166. This track uses a phone ring and a car horn as pseudo percussion to
  167. nice effect I think.  The only problem is, it sounds like mine so I
  168. keep looking to my phone.

  170.                     "Why'd ya have to leave it to Beaver?
  171.                      Now I'm chasin' Beaver's ass with a cleaver
  172.                      With the swing swing swing and chop chop chop"

  174. From there we get to the title track, "The Predator," with its liberal
  175. sprinking of quotes from the two movies.

  177.         "Comin' with a crazy pitch
  178.          and the statue of liberty 
  179.          ain't nothin' but a lazy b*tch"
  180.  
  181. Nice one, if not as memorable as the other stuff on this album.

  183. The next two tracks fit together pretty well.  The first one is "It
  184. Was a Good Day" which is all about, well, a good day.

  186.                               "I picked up the cash flow
  187.                                Then we played bones
  188.                                and I'm yellin' dominoes
  189.                                plus nobody I know got killed today
  190.                                in South Central LA
  191.                                ...today was a good day"
  192.  
  193. From there we move "We Had To Tear This Motherfucka Up."
  194.  
  195.           "Tearin' sh*t up with fire
  196.            Shoot us, loot us, now I got a laptop computer
  197.            I told you it would happen and you heard it
  198.            read it, but all you could call me was anti-semitic"
  199.  
  200. It's about the riots, if you couldn't tell.  Nice track but it would
  201. have been better with a harder bit of sound.  From there we stop by
  202. "Fuck Em (insert)" with samples from an interview.

  204.        "Anything you wanted to know about the riots was in the
  205.         records before the riot"
  206.  
  207. Back to the music with "Dirty Mack."  Nice horns.  Nice piano.

  209.                         "Even the guardian angels got mental
  210.                          Never saw their asses walkin' in South Central"

  212. This one didn't do a whole lot for me lyrically.  I like it, but it's
  213. one of the weaker tracks, I think.  Anyway, "Don't Trust 'Em" is all
  214. about women jackers who act as the set up for major ganks.

  216.            "But the new dirt hit
  217.             B*tches all over on
  218.             some new improved sh*t
  219.             To all ya'll macks
  220.             come to find out that b*tches are pullin' jacks
  221.             I remember every night all you had to worry about
  222.             was gettin' caught at a red light
  223.             and a nigga gettin ya for your Dana Danes
  224.             But now ya gotta worry about the ones in the skirt
  225.             and it ain't about being burnt."

  227. Sort of ridiculous and a lot like the next track "Gangsta's Fairytale
  228. 2" which is almost--but not quite--as good as the original.

  232.                             they'll catch his ass slippin'
  233.                             at his grandma's house"

  235. I could put more lyrics here, but it's something you have to hear for
  236. yourself. "Little Miss Muffet on her tuffet eatin' grits" indeed.

  238. Das EFX provides backup vocals on "Check Yo Self".  Nice little bit
  239. there.  Fans from the sewer will be pleased.  Nize soundz.

  245. In fact, it's very nice.

  254. This brings us to "Who Got The Camera?"  Nice fifty-second intro which
  255. starts off seeming to have nothing to do with the rest of the track.

  258.                 And the pigs wouldn't believe my slave name is Jackson
  259.                 He said, 'Don't lie to me'
  260.                 I'm lookin' for John, Matty or Spike Lee
  261.                 The motherf*ckers called for backup
  262.                 I guess they planned to beat the mack up
  263.                 Called me a silly-ass thug
  264.                 and pulled out his billy-ass-club"

  266. It manages to pull together tho'.

  276. The penultimate track "Integration (insert)" has a bit of Malcolm X
  277. and others.

  280.            he stands even if he's wrong... than the one who comes
  281.            up like an angel and is nothing but a devil."

  283. Nice little bit there.

  285. Anyway, Ice Cube decides to go out like hard with "Say Hi To The Bad
  286. Guy."

  288.   "We have taken control of this city to give you this special
  289.    bulletin.  And we will return this motherf*cker to you as soon as
  290.    the National Guard moves in."
  291.  
  292.          "The cops want to catch the nigga who won't fetch
  293.           But I'll blast ya, never call ya master
  294.           Who is that kickin' up sh*t much faster?
  295.           Rollin' on a scooter, ya know I might do ya
  296.           See a Black cop and my buck shots run right thru ya
  297.           I never knew ya."

  299. Nice way to end the album, I think....

  302. Well, you know how I feel about this one.  I give it props; however, I
  303. think I'd prefer some more hard-edged tracks like "When Will They
  304. Shoot" and "Wicked" next time.  Whatever.  Still all that.
  305.  
  306. Bottom line?  If you like Cube, especially the Cube preoccupied with
  307. the topics of _Amerikkka's Most Wanted_, buy it.  If you're unsure,
  308. give "Wicked" and, say, "It Was A Good Day" and "Check Yo Self."  Oh,
  309. hell, nevermind, just buy it.
