-
- Actually, many suburbs of Denver voted in favor of Amendment 2. Boulder was an
- exception.
-
- As Brian goes on to point out, not everyone in Colorado voted for Amendment 2,
- many businesses have declared themselves "hate-free zones", and some local
- governments have initiated lawsuits to have the amendment overturned.
-
- Given this information, if the intent of a boycott is to "punish" the people
- who voted for Amendment 2, then a non-selective boycott is probably not
- appropriate. However, I believe that the purpose of a boycott should be to
- draw national attention to the issue and to make people here and in other
- states realize that this civil rights violation will not be taken lightly.
- It seems to me that the best boycott strategy is to make a lot of noise about
- it, including cancelling conferences and concerts. Although I am looking
- forward to seeing the Dead in Denver, I would be completely supportive if
- they decided to cancel their show here because of the publicity it would
- generate. Lots of other states are going to try to pass similar amendments or
- legislation, but they might think twice about it if they see that people are
- boycotting Colorado.
-
- Meanwhile, the Dead are playing here, and lots of Deadheads will be visiting
- the state. A local group is in the process of compiling a list of pro- and
- anti-Amendment 2 businesses. I will post this list sometime before the shows
- if it is ready, so that you know where not to spend your money.
