  12. Somebody just noted that they see very few non-whites at shows,
  13. and wondered why.  I too have pondered over this question, and have
  14. a couple of guesses.
  15.  
  16. First, the entire counter-culture scene that developed in the
  17. late 60's seems to have been largely a middle-class white phenomenon.
  18. ILargely it was a college educated class that was secure enogh to
  19. be able to drop out for a while.  The same can be said today,
  20. it takes a lot of money to afford a tour's worth of tickets, and
  21. significant job flexibility to take the time off.  Some people,
  22. may have created craft lifestyles or otherwise escaped the system of
  23. corporate employment, but you also see an awful lot of students
  24. taking in shows over summer vacation.

  26. Second, it seems to me that a lot of white middle class people are
  27. sort of lost spiritually and culturally.  In their rejection of
  28. the system run by other white service class professionals, many
  29. 'heads find their sense of community and identity in the Dead.
  30. Perhaps people with minority backgrounds find that sense of identity
  31. in their own ethnic or racial communities and thus don't need
  32. to look for it in somethng like the Dead.

  34. Lastly, this may be off base but I think there is a tendancy
  35. to lump the Dead with the southern rock sound ala the Allmans
  36. or Lynard Skinnard.  Maybe some minority people assume that
  37. the audience of the show will be a bunch a drunken rednecks
  38. rather than the peaceful family we have all gotten to know and
  39. love :-)
