- Re: Tim McGee's book of medieval instrumental music, published by
- Indiana University Press. The book is not cheap (don't have my copy
- handy, but it's in the realm of $25). It's paper covers, wide spiral
- bound so that it will lay flat. Has a good discussion of the various
- repertoires, and some suggestions about performance practice (McGee has
- written other articles which deal with this question in greater detail).
- I recall at least one nasty review (I believe by a dance specialist) who
- felt that McGee had not looked to dance iconography enough in his tempo
- etc suggestions. But as a working string player (oud, etc), not a scholar
- in this area, I \
- I've found the book useful, practical, and informative. It's the closest
- thing to a "medieval music fake book" I've seen. Manuscript is computer-
- set, easy to read, and McGee's editorial hand is light. If you'd like more
- info, feel free to email me privately. Best wishes, chris smith
