- I agree with you absolutely that variety is the spice of life, but I
- don't see how using more songs from one particular songbook is going to make
- anyone feel more comfortable with the service. I doubt very much that a
- freshman would show up once and never come back simply because he or she
- isn't familiar with the music. If they enjoy singing, they will take the
- effort to learn the songs, and if they prefer to pray monotone (so boring,
- my prayer life gets so flat when I don't play songs to God regularly) then
- there must be other reasons they are being turned off. Before this gets too
- much off the original subject, may I suggest making copies of the words to all
- the songs passed out beforehand. If you're playing a tricky song for the first
- time, it doesn't hurt to teach it to everybody before you start. However, if
- people are being turned off, I would advise you to just reach out to them more.
- If you see someone new, introduce yourself. Make that person feel important.
- Then even if you played the worst, most dull and lifeless music imaginable,
- they would still come back for the sense of community. I hope I didn't stray
- too far from your original point.
