  16. WRT packing in the silencer of KDX200:  I have a '90.  It has packing.  It
  17. looks like a large wool donut that slides over the perforated tube on
  18. the spark arrestor/silencer section (middle element) of the silencer
  19. assembly.

  21. I have the Kawasaki shop manual for the '89 KDX200, & the supplement for
  22. the '90 model.  The manual & supplement have exploded views of the
  23. silencer, & both contain the packing I described.

  25. I have bought fiberglass insulation for wrapping pipes, & use this when
  26. I clean the silencer, held in place with a small piece of masking tape.
  27. I was given this suggestion by a friend who races enduro & hare
  28. scrambles, & repacks his silencer frequently.

  30. My KDX200 has 3000 miles on it.  I use it for trail riding, enduros, &
  31. the past 2 years in the Colorado 500, where I ride it at elevations over
  32. 14k feet.  The bike performs well, so I'm comfortable with how I'm servicing
  33. the silencer.

  35. YOU NEED TO CLEAN & REPACK YOUR SILENCER!  Buy the packing from Kawasaki,
  36. an after-market supplier, or do what I did.  If you don't clean the
  37. silencer, oil & carbon will build up, & your performance will decrease
  38. through increased back-pressure.  To make power, you want as little
  39. restriction going in, & going out as is practical.  The bike can be 
  40. kept quiet, & still make good power.
