- It pitches the Volvo as a fun-to-drive car ("why do you need a
- sports car when you can have one like this?").

-
- It's not that difficult. Pretty exciting, too.
-
- I accomplished the "feat" once on a well-graded dirt road
- in the Mojave Desert. After a long straight sandy stretch,
- the road crossed the toe of an alluvial fan, where it became
- twisty and gravelly. I was enjoying drifting my 122S
- around the turns until the rear end swung too far out on
- one turn. "Hey," I said to myself, "maybe I'm using too
- much gas". So I lifted up on the gas pedal.
-
- Sure enough, the rear wheels caught traction again.
- Unfortunately, the car was completely sideways in the road
- at this point, so the traction caused it to launch itself
- at the berm on the inside of the turn. My eyes immediately
- stretched to the size of pie plates (OK, so I didn't look
- in the mirror! They were big) as the car sailed through the
- air.
-
- We landed in a cloud of dust to the tune of about a bushel
- of gravel rattling around the engine compartment. Total
- damage: The fan belt was cracked and inside-out, from
- encounters with gravel.
-
- Better than a high side, I guess.
