  24. Why apologize? You're free to speak your mind here. Burn the damn flag if you
  25. want to, trash the song, protest America's overseas jingoism on foreign soil -
  26. America will survive it (though some reactionary types might not take kindly
  27. to it.)

  29. Why? Because America is built on _values_ and _laws_, not symbols like a piece
  30. of cloth or a stupid, awkward-to-sing anthem that glorfies America's violent
  31. beginnings rather than celebrating its virtues. Values like freedom, diversity,
  32. and tolerance. Laws like the Bill of Rights, the system of checks and balances
  33. laid out in the Constitution, the free press.

  35. I think the ones who ought to apologize are the spodes who knee-jerked at your
  36. "home of the brave" comment. I recall a quote that says "I'd rather vote for
  37. a man who burns the flag than one who wraps himself in it." For the true
  38. patriots are those people who love their country and its people, and want
  39. something better for both.
