- The discussion of what bikes to take on long trips, punctuated by
- the discussions of just where you can't go on a full dress tourer have
- been interesting. An interesting sidebar on the discussion arrived
- in the mail yesterday. It's particularly germain in light of the folks
- who claim that you can't do a lot ot the trans Canada/Alaska stuff on
- the big luxo-tourers.
-
- In the December issue of Wing World, there is an article about two guys
- who did the Dempster Highway on Gold Wings. For those who don't know,
- you get to the Dempster by taking the Alaska Highway from Dawson Creek
- to Whitehorse. From Whitehorse, take
- Highway 2 (the Klondike Highway) to Dawson City. The Dempster leaves
- Highway 2 near Dawson City and goes North, crossing the Arctic Circle,
- to Inuvik, near the Beaufort Sea. The Dempster is 475 miles of dirt
- road and from everything I have read in other articles, can best be
- described as unpredictable. Once you get to Inuvik, the only way out
- is back over the Dempster. It made an interesting read and gave
- me a new perspective on what you can do with a big bike. While the
- big tourers have their limitations, much of the limitation is not
- the bike, but the rider.
-
- In another article about the Dempster, it was nicknamed "The Dumpster".
- By the way, this article indicated that the roads were paved as far as
- the junction of Highway 2 and the Dempster. The writers recommended
- a publication called "Milepost" for information on the Alaska, Klondike
- and Dempster Highways. It can be obtained by calling 800-331-3510.
