- Allow me to qualify this. If I bother to think about it, I can see the sides
- of my helmet, but I never notice it while I'm riding, even when I look around
- my glasses to check my blind spot. I can see a lot better with a helmet and
- a shield than I can with the dirt in my face on my bicycle.
-
- I'm not justifying helmet laws, but I offer a statistic. When the helmet law
- came in in Quebec, the number of accidents/ bike registration went down.
- (This was commonly attributed to proper eye protection). On this basis,
- it's unlikely that a helmet will cause an accident. There are exceptions
- to everything, of course, but what do you do to *minimize* the risk?
-
- >damage so you don't need to remove it to hear. Even wearing a helmet I hear

-
- Very true. And you see more too. And many motorcycle accidents are unassisted,
- anyway, in cases where the rider missed or misjudged something right in front
- of him, in the road!
-
- People who hold their babies in their laps in the front seat of a car are
- truly stupid or sadistic. People who go hatless because they honestly think
- that helmets are dangerous are not paying attention (get a friend with a
- baseball bat to hit you over the head while you're wearing a helmet, remove
- helmet and repeat...). People who understand the risks but put up with them
- for what they consider to be a better quality of life (we all do it, it's
- just a matter of degree) are just making a choice.
-
- How many of you have *never* been down? If you're one of them, have you ever
- had a close call where the only thing that got you out was good luck? It's
- dangerous out there. The other drivers are a menace. We make mistakes. Please
- unserstand what you're getting into when you choose not to bring your safety
- gear.
