- A friend of mine rode up to Whitehorse, AK and back from Marysville, CA
- which covered 4950 miles in 8 nights! His moto was a used Yamaha XS850
- Special...one blown fork seal and broken battery cable connector were
- the only problems encountered. He used a pair of washers on battery
- cable and wiped the fork leg at gas stops afterwards. The XS850 used
- 18" rear wheel from standard XS750 rather than the OEM 16" meat. He
- also spotted some Wings tipped over on the rougher roads. I'd say that
- many of the older UJM with shafts such as the XS750/850 Yamahas, Suzuki
- GS850G and others would offer a low initial investment and maximum
- reliability on such an adventure especially since most motos suffer
- from such AK trips when on the really rough sections so they'd need
- attention afterwards which could be very expensive for newer motos
- while an older one could simply head to the local cycle salvage yard
- or sold as a parts bike. YMMV.
