  14. With regard to BMW panniers:

  16. BMW do not buy their cases from Krauser anymore, and haven't since 1989 at
  17. least.  They seem to have fallen out with Krauser and now have their panniers
  18. made elsewhere.  The frames are black plastic stuff which are very good and
  19. the panniers do not fall out or open anymore.  I speak from personal experience
  20. of over three years of abusing the BMW panniers on Kay, my K100RS.  I have
  21. loaded the panniers far beyond their recommended carrying weight and have
  22. driven over rough terrain and at far higher speeds than BMW recommend.  One of
  23. the problems I have with them is that they leak water because I have forced 
  24. them to close several times when I shouldn't ie when I had overfilled them or 
  25. put an awkward shaped object in them.  I live with the results of my own 
  26. mistakes (four children also!).

  28. When I was at The Bike Show (NEC, Brum) I talked to one of the head guys on
  29. the Krauser stand and he was quite vehement in his condemnation of BMW and
  30. their "dreadful" attitude in not using Krauser panniers anymore.  He said that
  31. their panniers were much better than BMW's.  I disagree for at least one main
  32. reason, and that is that BMW make panniers to fit their bikes which you can
  33. see if you look at a panniered BMW, the bike-side of the pannier case fits
  34. into the space below and to the back of the seat which makes the overall width
  35. of the panniered bike several inches narrower.  I remember my previous bikes
  36. with Krauser panniers and how wide they were.  Several times I have caught a
  37. pannier on a cage and once had an accident because of this.  With Kay, I have
  38. to be obscenely close to do such a thing.
