- |The story doesn't matter - the moral does. And that is it's the responsibility
- |of the rider/owner to make sure the passenger has the choice of dressing
- |protectively. If the passenger doesn't want to wear protective clothing, then
- |that's their choice. *But* give them the choice. The first thing that people
- |say when I offer them a go on the back is "Bikes are dangerous". I placate them
- |with the offer of protective clothing, then most will accept a ride. It shows
- |you've considered them, and that you probably aren't a loony slaughterer of
- |innocent passengers.
-
- I look at it a little differently. If someone is not a regular passenger or
- a motorcyclist in his own right, he hasn't the experience to make an informed
- decision. Now, that in itself is not a good enough reason to infringe on
- someone's right to ride at any risk level they choose. What really makes the
- difference is that *I* am *responsible* for their safety. No matter how you
- feel about individual rights, the fact is that the driver is responsible in
- LARGE part for the safety of the passengers. As long as I have the responsiblity,
- I also have the responsiblity to INSURE the safety of my passengers as much
- as I can. That means that the rider wear's at LEAST as much protective
- equipment as myself. (That is, if I have one helmet and Miss Perfect want's
- a ride NOW, I will forgo the helmet myself, and any other safety equipment
- that I can, in favor of dressing up Miss Perfect. If M.P. wants to continue
- to ride with me, she can use my pillion equipment, or get her own.)
