- Impressive ascization! I like it!
-
- Regarding the helix talk, I was the instigator of a lot of it. I didn't
- save the articles, but I have a memory of what was said.
-
- Basically, you need to reconcile a few problems with helix:
- 1. grade (with corner friction, grade becomes more of a limitation.)
- 2. footprint (a 4' x 4' chunk of the layout is consumed, minimally.)
- 3. length of time out of view. (can get boring waiting for a train
- you can't see.)
- 4. maintenance. (it's harder to fix track buried in a helix.)
-
- There were a few different designs ranging from heavy construction with
- plywood to 1/4" plywood with stiffeners to the sides of the tracks so
- clearance is not a problem. My recommendation is to keep the same standard
- of strength that is used everywhere else.
-
- Also, dos and don'ts, like, switches in a helix == BAD Idea. Spiral rather
- than true helix == possible idea which may make better use of materials.
