-
- Athearn is probably the best value for the money, but If I had it all over
- to do again, I wish I would have bought high quality locomotives, like
- Atlas, Stewart, KATO, Life-Like "Proto" etc. Some Athearn detail
- is excellent (GP40,GP50,SW1000,SW1500), but most look like
- toys compared to the high quality names.
-
- Athearn cars are good, but I like MDC (Model Die Cast, also known as
- Roundhouse) better. They make more of the modern equipment than
- does Athearn.
-
- Perhaps the question should be rephrased as :
-
- What should someone buy who is new to the hobby?
-
- As a gift, spending close to $100 for a locomotive might be rather
- expensive.

- To the FAQ, you should add:
-
- What kind of couplers are best, and for what situtations?
-
- If it's for a trainset that kids will enjoy, I would suggest leaving
- the horn-hook couplers on.
-
- Serious model railroaders will use KD's. Not only do they look
- prototypical, but they work better than horn-hooks.
