- As I understand it, the belt system originated in Japan in the
- late 19 th century with Kano. It wasn't till the 1920s and on that
- karate folk started using belts.

- The classical martial arts of Japan didn't/don't use belt ranks.
- There were various licences, but that's really a totally different
- ball of wax.
