  14. here's a radical but pleasant non-tree alternative...

  16. get several decorative fishnets - they come in various sizes and
  17. colors - and stretch them out *over* a room or two, attaching them to
  18. hooks or nails in moldings or in door or window or picture frames, or
  19. to curtain hardware lighting fixtures or whatever, so that they're
  20. pretty taut.  then hang your ornaments on the nets.  you're sort of
  21. *inside* the xmas decorations.

  23. no trees.  also nothing for cats and dogs to climb onto, knock over,
  24. or drag around the room.  if you have to have lights, these can be
  25. added with only small amounts of additional cleverness.

  27. we did this in our ohio house for years in addition to a tree, then
  28. instead of one.  (during all those years we had a cat and for some of
  29. them a dog as well.)  i came to like it much more than a tree.  you
  30. can enjoy the ornaments separately and together much more easily than
  31. on a tree.  (we have great boxes of peculiar and beautiful ornaments,
  32. many of them hand-made.  cheap jewelry torn apart and strung into
  33. designs, ceramic oddities, penguins of all materials and styles,
  34. the blue pig, musical instruments, blown glass, paper snowflakes,
  35. all sorts of stuff.)

  37. now i'm in california for xmas, often with friends in santa cruz
  38. rather than in our own house in palo alto, and often without my man
  39. jacques, so decoration is minimal - a collection of fabulous
  40. glass-bead geometric structures made by my daughter, hung from the
  41. track lighting (a distant descendant of the fishnet technique).  they
  42. catch the light and reflect it in many colors around the room.  we
  43. also get two or three freesias, for their scent.  nothing like
  44. a classic northern european xmas scene, i realize, but still very
  45. satisfying in its own way.
