- Last night I was playing matchpoints at the local club with a friend.
- Our system was very basic, no negative doubles or any other silly doubles
- - we started with an 800 penalty at the 2 level and continued from there).
- But such successes are not the point of the story. Later I held
- AK92 J4 AK4 QJ93 at love all and heard the auction proceed
-
- N E S W
- 1C X XX 1S
- 2C 2H ?
-
- Partner's 1C was better minor and 2C warned that he might be short on
- defensive vaues as normal. Clearly a punt at 5C is rather likely to be
- successful but let's look a little more closely. W appears to have nothing and
- the doubler can't have more than a dozen points and therefore must be close to
- ideal shape but on the other hand she refused spades; 2542 maybe. Where can she
- develop tricks, ruff a club on table maybe but that's all.
- It seems certain to go off so, manfully masterminding, I doubled. (Partner had
- missed a couple of juicy ones earlier). I also thought I should lead hearts
- and then play clubs after dummy had been neutered. To my horror, the rho LOL
- turned up with xx AKTxxxx xxx x , dummy turned up with QJxx Qxx xxx xxx and to
- rub salt into the wounds partner gave a ruff and discard later in the play so
- the damn thing made.
-
- Nobody seemed interested in my logic
- nor was anyone terribly sympathetic :-(
-
- I wonder where she learned that little trick?
