  12. Last night I was playing matchpoints at the local club with a friend.
  13. Our system was very basic, no negative doubles or any other silly doubles
  14.  - we started with an 800 penalty at the 2 level and continued from there).
  15. But such successes are not the point of the story. Later I held

  22. Partner's 1C was better minor and 2C warned that he might be short on
  23. defensive vaues as normal. Clearly a punt at 5C is rather likely to be
  24. successful but let's look a little more closely. W appears to have nothing and
  25. the doubler can't have more than a dozen points and therefore must be close to
  26. ideal shape but on the other hand she refused spades; 2542 maybe. Where can she
  27. develop tricks, ruff a club on table maybe but that's all.
  28. It seems certain to go off so, manfully masterminding, I doubled. (Partner had
  29. missed a couple of juicy ones earlier). I also thought I should lead hearts
  30. and then play clubs after dummy had been neutered. To my horror, the rho LOL
  31. turned up with xx AKTxxxx xxx x , dummy turned up with QJxx Qxx xxx xxx and to
  32. rub salt into the wounds partner gave a ruff and discard later in the play so
  33. the damn thing made.
