- LAS VEGAS(AP) Sands Hotel owder Sheldon Adelson says he is scaling
- back plans for a major expansion at the Strip resort because of a
- changing economic climate and concern about possible overbuilding
- here.
-
- Adleson is chief executive of The Interface Group, which produces the annual
- Comdex computer show in Las Vegas. The show, which began yesterday
- and runs through Friday, is expected to draw some 130,00 people.
-
- Adelson bought the Sands for $110 million in April of 1989 and said
- he'd spend $150 millino on a one million-square-foot convention center
- and a 1,300-room tower at the famous 40-years-old property.
-
- The Sands Expo and Convention Center opened in 1990 with
- 575,000 square-feet. But the rest of the convention center and
- the tower plans have been put on hold.
-
- Adelson said the financing market is not what it was in the
- 1980s, and the financial community is concerned that major
- new projects in Las Vegas may glut the local hotel market.
