- J . Now to the equestrian part! Most of the many horses used in the
- J . show are Andalusians, many of them stallions. They had many of
- J . them fitted with hoods and matching blankets, but not armored.
- J . The knight's saddles were built up in the back for support - I
- J . don't know if this is an authentic copy????
-
- I went to the Medieval Times in Southern California (Anaheim, Buena
- Park, ?) a few years ago. The horses used there were Quarters & TBs.
- They must use what's available in the area.
-
- J . Lastly, a question. Although there was a lot of "dressage" work,
- J . it seemed more showy than precise, as I said. I have seen this before
- J . in circuses and other horse exhibitions. My question is about the
- J . headgear - all the horses in the show seemed to wear a curb bit
- J . with a medium shank, fairly severe. I would expect this for the "gaming"
- J . type actions of the knights, but was surprised to see it on the
- J . riding exhibitors, especially the horse in training in tandem. The
- J . trainer could really haul this horse into sidepasses and backing
- J . with that bit. Question (at last): is this bit a part of Spanish
- J . training of Andalusians, or is this more just this particular
- J . trainer's method for producing the horses needed for the show?

- While there are considerable differences between "circus dressage" and
- "competitive dressage," both have the same goals of a relaxed, supple,
- obedient, well-schooled horse. What I saw at Medieval Times was, at
- best, a poor example of circus dressage. The use of such curb bits just
- exemplifies the quality of what I (and probably you) saw. For contrast,
- the ultimate in circus dressage is the Spanish Riding School. That's
- not to say that the Medieval Times show isn't a lot of fun. It's just
- not great horsemanship.
