- More on fitting of shoes.... IMHO
- The theory on shoes being full fitted 1/8" or more will be
- debated by many vets and farriers. One thing most agree on is the
- extension beyond the heels. If you droped a straight line down
- the front of the cannon bone, the shoe in an ideal situation would
- be divided in thirds with 1/3 going under the leg (behind
- the line) for support. A line
- down the space between the cannon bone and tendon should at least
- touch the rear of the shoe.
-
- On expansion for the sides on the shoes - I agree with leaving
- expansion, although on hunters or clumsy youngsters, it sometimes is
- just enough to catch a thumbnail if you feel the edge. It does require
- more frequent shoeing - as the hoof grows down it also grows out, similar
- to a cone getting longer. The shoe becomes smaller than the hoof
- and the size difference is quite noticable when cleaning the foot.
