- If your wife belongs to a spinning guild, that would be a good place to
- look for help. If there are any used wheels for sale in your area, they
- would know about it. Find an old issue of her guild newsletter and call
- someone (the newsletter editor usually knows about used equipment for
- sale). The local guild would also know of any spinning wheel dealers in
- your area where you could buy a new wheel or a kit. If your wife hasn't
- joined a guild, then find her Spring issue of Spin-Off; they list guilds
- around the country each year, with the name and address of a contact
- person.
-
- If you decide to buy a used wheel it would be a good idea to have someone
- you trust spin with it. I realize that this might not be possible. In any
- case you should familiarize yourself with the parts of a wheel (so that
- you'll know if any are missing), and at the very least sit and treadle it
- for a while to see if it feels comfortable and smooth--the ideal wheel
- should feel effortless to treadle.
-
- Many people begin on Ashford wheels (usually the Ashford Traditional) or
- Louet wheels. Both start in the low $200's (new--kit form) and are the
- most commonly available used wheels. They're not as versatile as some of
- the more expensive wheels, though. I own a Louet and a Schacht; the
- Schacht is my favorite. It retails for about $475, but is sometimes
- available for less. It's a beautiful wheel to spin on, and one that won't
- be outgrown. If money is no object (ha!) I would recommend it for anyone.
-
-
- I'm afraid I have no help to offer on making one from plans, but that
- sounds wonderful if you can manage it.
