I just recently learned how to tat (the last year) and have made alot of progress with ALOT of patience... but well worth the effort. Someday I hope to complete my dream project ... a tatted angel for my christmas tree!! :)
Anyway I learned by buying supplies from WALMART. They have a wonderful selection of inexpensive threads of different thicknesses. Start thick if you are a beginner it is easier to see the knots. There is LEARN HOW TO book put out by Coats and Clark. A great book to start any handicraft.... It includes knitting, crocheting, tatting and embroidery and it is inexpensive also... about $4. It includes patterns for the different stages of a beginner... just a shuttle, a shuttle and a ball, or 2 shuttles an
d a ball. They also have a book of lace edgings in tatting, knitting and crochet. A lace hanky or lace towels are nice projects to start on.... they are simple and are very rewarding. There are many books that discuss tatting but I really think WALMART is a good place to start.... minimal financial investment and maximum enjoyment..
By the way, I am not associated with either Coats and Clark or WALMART... but I commend them for encouraging the arts of tatting, knitting and crochet.
