- This last weekend, my 10 1/2 year old son, Jamal, accompanied me and the
- Explorers of High Adventure Post 2929, on a trip to Joshua Tree Nat'l.
- Monument. This was his first experience on 'real' rock and he spent most
- of Saturday paying strict attention to the standard safety and technique
- sessions and getting a shot at a 30 ft. rappel. On Sunday morning, the
- group went to Jaime's Rock and set up a top-rope belay on the "Unknown
- Crack" (5.7 in the Indian Cove Guide Book). After several of the older
- kids fell off the route, not being able to make the crux move into the
- long jam crack, Jamal asked if he could try. He laced his shoes up tight,
- roped up, and spent 20 minutes working out the move, not once leaning on
- the rope or coming loose from the rock. Just when his steam was about to
- run out he said, "I see a little hold right there. I'll try to grab it,"
- whereby he lunged and got ahold of it and pulled himself into the
- jamcrack. He then clambered up to the top and dropped in a heap, all of the
- older kids cheering wildly.
-
- This kid weighs about 68 pounds, soaking wet after Thanksgiving Dinner, is
- not what you'd call an athlete, but his feeling after this accomplishment
- was no less than that of winning the World Series.
-
- If anyone would like to send word of congratulations and encouragement,
- Jamal has his own e-mail account at school:

-
- Thanks,
- Jon Lyksett, a proud dad.
