- The continuing saga of the Honda 8HP outboard and its charging facility.
- I have received many, many notes on my charging problem (output from
- engine shows -0.5 volts on open circuit), but none of them seemed quite
- right, although there was a lot of food for thought. Knowing Honda's
- passion for Safety First (there Legal Dept. I imagine) I decided to
- connect the whole thing up to my brand new battery and see what happened.
- As a precaution I removed the battery from the bowels of FELIX and got
- it up in the cockpit with the Fluke attached (great voltmeter, the Model
- 10 -- the bottom of the line) and it registered 12.17 volts and the
- hydrometer was just in the red. So here was a new, charged battery that
- had lain around charged for some time. I started the motor and plugged in
- the charging lead (I had previously checked polarity by peeking inside
- the motor and assuming that the fused, red insulated line was +ive.
- At idle the volts "jumped" from 12.17 to about 12.21, and as I revved
- the motor up a bit I could get it up to about 12.40. After about 3 mins
- the battery registered 12.24, so there has been a net influx of the good
- stuff. So, it looks OK, but I was surprised that it did not jump up
- to 14+ on charge. Is this just another Honda Safety First thing? Oh yes,
- I took the charging plug off and on a couple of times and nothing dire
- happened -- after all, it is designed to be worked by featherless bipeds
- who, like myself, have zero understanding of Advanced Electronics. I
- think I will order the Manual for the engine tho'.
-
- Any comments? Oh yes, I guess I could check the hydrometer again. FELIX
- does not have a Distribution Panel, and I'm thinking of getting one. I
- suppose an Ammeter would make sense, too.
