- The spring 1993 issue of KATUAH, the bioregional journal of southern
- Appalachia, will discuss *sustainable* tourism in the region. KATUAH JOURNAL
- is a non-profit publication, without advertising and without paid staff. We
- would very much like any feedback on the issues of sustainable tourism and/or
- southern Appalachia. Please email me a copy of any posted response.
- Although southern Appalachia has traditionally been an economically
- depressed area, tourism is now the leading industry. This area offers the
- tourist some of the best nature east of the Mississippi river, including
- mountains, forests, rivers, waterfalls, and abundant wildlife, as well as some
- of the last vestiges of folk culture in North America. This folk culture
- includes our native American indian roots, as well as the traditional mountain
- culture of the southern highlands, and even extends to what may have been the
- epicenter of the back-to-the-land movement of the Sixties and Seventies.
- Here, for example, there are still more homesteads with gardens than
- commercial farms, and more fleamarkets than shopping malls.
- In the issue, we will focus on:
-
- - defining sustainable tourism in relation to economic conversion
- - native American Cherokee indian
- traditional transport and communication infrastructure
- sacred sites
- current attractions
- - historic overview of tourism development in southern Appalachia
