  18. The spring 1993 issue of KATUAH, the bioregional journal of southern
  19. Appalachia, will discuss *sustainable* tourism in the region.  KATUAH JOURNAL
  20. is a non-profit publication, without advertising and without paid staff.  We
  21. would very much like any feedback on the issues of sustainable tourism and/or
  22. southern Appalachia.  Please email me a copy of any posted response.
  23.      Although southern Appalachia has traditionally been an economically
  24. depressed area, tourism is now the leading industry.  This area offers the
  25. tourist some of the best nature east of the Mississippi river, including
  26. mountains, forests, rivers, waterfalls, and abundant wildlife, as well as some
  27. of the last vestiges of folk culture in North America.  This folk culture
  28. includes our native American indian roots, as well as the traditional mountain
  29. culture of the southern highlands, and even extends to what may have been the
  30. epicenter of the back-to-the-land movement of the Sixties and Seventies.
  31. Here, for example, there are still more homesteads with gardens than
  32. commercial farms, and more fleamarkets than shopping malls.
  33.      In the issue, we will focus on:
  34.
