- "The Fools Progress" is a very thought provoking book. Shortly before
- Abbey died I went to a book signing at Cody's books in Berkeley, and
- got an autographed copy. It was sort of a lark, really, because,
- while I had read a lot of his works, I don't by any means idolize him.
- [By the way, one of the funniest bits I have ever read is his "A Review
- of 'Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance'" -- brought tears to my
- eyes when I first read it...].
-
- Anyway, I had the book, and felt duty bound to read it. The story is
- about a journey by a main character who is a thinly disguised Abbey.
- This character is driven and obsessive, irrational and actually rather
- unpleasant. Gradually, over the course of the journey his life story
- is revealed through flashbacks, but for at least the first half of the
- book I was struggling to continue -- the hero was basically a jerk
- with a mysterious obsession. I don't want to spoil it for anyone, but
- at some point the book grabbed my attention. My opinion of the book,
- which had been somewhat negative, changed remarkably. Now I think of
- it as a *really* good book, like "Crime and Punishment" or "Huckleberry
- Finn" or "The Glass Bead Game" -- a potentially great novel. Of course,
- only history will decide whether it is or not.
-
- Anyway, I think it is fair to say that a good percentage of Abbey's
- fans don't "idolize" him -- I certainly don't. But he had an engaging
- sense of humor, a passionate love of life, and enough internal honesty
- to be able to expose his contradictions to the world. I don't think
- of him as an idol, I think of him as a friend that I never really met.
- I was sad when he died.
