- A word of warning regarding Ball altitude derivative varios for
- sailplane use. We have a very nice Ball vario about 3 years old. In
- spite of several returns to the factory when first purchased, we have
- never been able to eliminate RFI interference. It pegs hard over for
- several seconds (and then sticks at the peg for several more seconds)
- whenever the radio transmits. We have tried bypass filters, mumetal
- wrap, etc. Nothing helps. The factory replaced the original plastic case
- with a supposedly carbon loaded conductive case, no effect. I seem to
- recall that Ball's earlier capacitive diaphragm varios originally had this
- problem, but they were finally corrected.
-
- Bottom line, be very careful with the newer Ball altitude derivative
- varios if you also have to transmit on VHF. For those that are not
- familiar with the concept, the altitude derivative varios do not work on
- flow into or out of a flask as most varios do, but measure altitude with
- a microchip sensor and differentiate the output to get rate of altitude change,
- i.e., climb or sink rate.
-
- Incidentally, anyone without a radio in their ship need a nice Ball
- Altitude derivative vario. Triple time constant with switch, micropower,
- runs all summer from a 9 volt transister battery. $250 when new 3 years
- ago, make me an offer.
